Elementary education in the Philippines covers Grades 1 to 6 and serves as the foundation of lifelong learning, equipping students with essential knowledge, skills, and values needed for their academic journey and personal development. It is part of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum mandated by the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10533), ensuring that every child receives compulsory, inclusive, and high-quality education.
Curriculum and Key Learning Areas
The elementary curriculum is designed to be learner-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally relevant. It is divided into two key stages:
Key Stage 1 (Grades 1-3): Focuses on foundational literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills. Instruction is delivered in the Mother Tongue to enhance comprehension and communication skills.
Key Stage 2 (Grades 4-6): Strengthens core academic subjects and introduces higher-order thinking skills, preparing students for Junior High School.
The core subjects include:
Mathematics – Builds problem-solving and analytical skills.
Science – Develops curiosity, scientific thinking, and environmental awareness.
English – Enhances communication skills, reading comprehension, and grammar proficiency.
Filipino – Strengthens national identity and language proficiency.
Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) – Fosters historical awareness, civic consciousness, and socio-cultural understanding.
Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP) – Instills moral values, ethics, and good citizenship.
MAPEH (Music, Arts, PE, and Health) – Promotes creativity, physical well-being, and artistic expression.
Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) / Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) – Introduces basic livelihood and practical skills.
Holistic Development and Inclusion
Beyond academics, elementary education emphasizes character development, social skills, and emotional intelligence, ensuring that learners grow into well-rounded individuals. Schools provide co-curricular and extracurricular activities, such as sports, scouting, arts, and leadership training, to foster student engagement and personal growth.
DepEd also ensures inclusive education by implementing programs for learners with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners, and children in difficult circumstances, reinforcing the principle of education for all.
Preparation for Higher Learning
Elementary education serves as the stepping stone to Junior High School, equipping students with the necessary competencies, confidence, and discipline to succeed in more complex academic and social environments. By the time students complete Grade 6, they are expected to have strong literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills, making them ready for the next phase of learning.
XSEED teachers begin a class by clearly stating the learning goal, ask children what they know already, demonstrate an experiment or conduct a group activity, let children speak before they do, ensure the “application questions” are done independently, fiercely believe in practice, assess daily, and support each child individually.
